According to Hindu mythology, the story of Chintapurni Devi, like other Shaktipeeth temples, is associated with Goddess Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva. It is about the time when Goddess Sati reached the yagna organized by her father King Prajapati Daksha without invitation. He invited all the gods and sages, but deliberately excluded his son-in-law Shiva to insult him. Hurt by her father's decision, Sati decided to meet her father and ask the reason for not inviting her.
When she entered Daksha's palace, she insulted Shiva. Unable to bear anything against her husband, Devi Sati threw herself into the sacrificial fire. When Shiva's attendants informed him of his wife's demise, he became angry and created Veerabhadra. Veerabhadra wreaked havoc in Daksha's palace and killed him.
Meanwhile, mourning the death of his beloved soul, Shiva tenderly grabbed Sati's body and began a dance of destruction (Tandava). To save the universe and restore Shiva's sanity, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's lifeless body into 51 pieces using the Sudarshan Chakra. These pieces fell on the earth at several places where the Shakti Peethas of the Goddess are established today. One of those 51 pieces of Goddess Sati's body fell at this place where the famous Chhinnamastika Devi or Chintapurni Devi temple is established today.

Another legend says that the Goddess appeared to kill two demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, whom she slayed after a fierce battle. But her two yogini emanations (Jaya and Vijaya) were still thirsty for more blood, following which Goddess Chandi cut off her own head to quench the thirst of blood of Jaya and Vijaya.
According to old scriptures, Puranas and other religious books, it is also mentioned that Lord Rudra Mahadev will protect the Dham or temple of Maa Chhinnamastika. Therefore, this Shaktipeeth is surrounded on all four sides by Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple in the east, Narhana Mahadev Temple in the west, Muchchkund Mahadev Temple in the north, Shiv Bari Temple in the south.
Bhai Mai Das was an ardent devotee of Goddess Durga. Once upon a time, the Goddess came in his dream and asked him to build a temple at this place. So keeping in mind the command of the Lord, he built the temple in Chhaparoh village. Since then, his descendants started worshipping Shri Chintapurni. His descendants are now the official priests of this temple.
