If we talk about the history of Mumbai Zoo, then the history of this famous zoo is more than 150 years old. Mumbai Zoo was built in 1861, at that time this zoo was named after the then empress, Queen Victoria. While after some time it also started being called Ranichi Bagh.

It is believed that after some years, this zoo was donated to the Mumbai government by Jewish businessman Mr. David Sasson, after which this zoo is under the supervision of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Also, its name was changed to Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyaan.

Spread over an area of ​​48 acres, the zoo is home to around 180 mammals, 500 birds and 40 reptiles. Apart from these, the zoo has around 3000 species of trees, most of which are rare. The zoo is currently home to varieties of animals like lions, hyenas, foxes, monitor lizards, black bucks, monkeys, bears, hippopotamuses, crocodiles and langurs. There is an open enclosure for a group of black spotted deer, while another is for two elephants called Anarkali and Laxmi. The zoo also had several rare species of snakes, but after an incident of a boa constrictor going missing a few years ago, the reptile house was closed. The zoo has separate houses for lesser-known species like Indian striped hyenas, dholes or wild dogs and many more. Rare albino crows, flamingos and peacocks can also be seen in the zoo aviary.

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum is another major attraction of Mumbai Zoo which attracts a lot of tourists coming here. Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum was originally established in 1855 by Lord Elphinstone as the first museum of Bombay and is called the Central Museum of Natural History, Economy, Geology, Industry and Art on the initiative of George Bust. Let us tell you that this museum displays a vast collection of artifacts and relics of archaeological and historical importance such as clay models, silver, bronze and copper utensils, costumes and weapons of the past. Among its most notable assets, a 17th-century manuscript of Hatim Tai and the recovered structure of a monolithic basalt elephant originating from outside Elephanta Island are also present here.
